Slick's Halloween Funnies

It's ironic that I decided to post this specific comic on Halloween. I almost always get sick/catch a cold on or around Halloween. This year was no exception. I spent Halloween weekend sniffling, sneezing and blowing my nose (much like Slick here). Regardless, Happy Halloween Everybody!

Slick's Halloween Funnies

Well, it's that time of year again when ghosts and goblins by the score, ring the bell on your front door. To celebrate, all week long I'll be posting some Slick Halloween Funnies. I drew these for my 2009 24 Hour Comic. Enjoy these Halloween comics and Happy Halloween!

Back to the Future Jam Comic by the 4 After 5 Artists

Here is the final Back to the Future Jam Comic by the 4 After 5 crew. The entire 4 After 5 crew loves this movie, so it was a lot of fun creating these alternate endings to one of best movie franchises ever. Personally, this movie is one of those "desert island" movies. I love the entire trilogy.

Just to recap: panel one is drawn by yours truly, Brad Campbell. Panel two is by Jeff Welborn. The third panel is illustrated by Travis Eck. The final panel is drawn by Jeremy Johnson. We will be selling a comic book full of jam comics like this one at our 4 After 5 opening reception on November 18.

Did you like this comic? Wanna see more from the 4 After 5 artists? Then, check out the 4 After 5 Art Exhibit.

Back to the Jam: Part 4

Here's Jeremy Johnson's hilarious panel depicting the alternate ending of Back to the Future. I also love the original Planet of the Apes movie, so combining these two movies make this panel my favorite of the bunch. Great job, Jeremy. Tune in tomorrow and check out the complete comic.

Back to the Jam: Part 3

Remember when Marty and Doc returned to the alternate 1985 in BTTF Part 2? Well, what if that alternate 1985 was overrun by zombies? Now you know, thanks to Travis Eck. This is a panel from the 4 After 5 BTTF jam comic.

Back to the Jam: Part 2

Here's the next panel of the 4 After 5 jam comic tribute to Back to the Future. This one's by Jeff Welborn. I think he did a great job. I love his caricature of Marty McFly.

Back to the Jam: Part 1

Hey, folks. I'm still gearing up for the upcoming 4 After 5 art exhibit. Just a reminder, the opening reception takes place on November 18 from 5 - 8 pm at coolspace @ artspace. Can't make it to opening night? No sweat! The show will display through January 7, 2011. The show will feature art by Brad Campbell (me), Travis Eck, Jeremy Johnson and Jeff Welborn.

Speaking of those guys, here's a panel from one of our jam comics. Once a month, the 4 After 5 crew meets to discuss event planning, cartooning, etc. We usually conclude our meetings with a drawing session in which we create a jam comic. Here's how it works: one of us will start drawing a panel and then pass it along to the next artist. Then, the next artist continues the story. This goes on and on until the story is finished. It's a really fun and creative way to make comics.

This jam comic was a tribute to one of my all-time favorite movies, Back to the Future. I'll post a panel per day. On Friday, I'll post the completed comic.

LOCAL DESIGNERS ANNOUNCE “4AFTER5” ART SHOW AT ARTSPACE THIS NOVEMBER - JANUARY

Shreveport, LA — The 4AFTER5 art collective consists of four designers pursuing their passion for illustration after hours. Sure, they love their day jobs as graphic designers, but they’ve also had a love for art in other forms since childhood – animation, painting, comics and more. Come see what is created once they’ve clocked out!

The art show will take place at Coolspace @ Artspace in downtown Shreveport, November 18, 2010 – January 7, 2011. An opening reception is to be held on Thursday, November 18, 2010, from 5 – 8 pm.

The participating artists are Brad Campbell, Travis EckJeremy Johnson and Jeff Welborn, all current residents of the Shreveport-Bossier area. The group plans to showcase a side of art not often seen in galleries. While their work ranges from comic books and strips to pop art and is expressed in a variety of mediums, there is a cohesive spirit of fun, energy and wonder that comes to life in their chosen styles.

Art Imitates Life

This actually happened to me recently at an art show. Drawing comics can be therapeutic. Yeah, I was mad when this happened. I drew this comic and afterward, I felt better. I was able to laugh at the situation.

Weird Sketch Wednesdays

It's been a while since I've had a WSW post. This one's not really that weird. It is timely. Shreveport just held its mayoral elections a few days ago. It seems there will be a runoff on November 2. This really doesn't affect me since I live in Bossier City. I'd probably vote for Glover though. This unpublished sketch was done a few years ago for a magazine article.

"Daniel-San. Show Me Stretch the Pants!"

Original Article from SB Magazine

Here's a magazine illustration that I did using my Wacom tablet. The author mentions in the article that she would do karate kicks in order to stretch her tight-fitting pants. I'm not sure if that really works, but I thought it would make a funny visual. So I drew it. I really like the crispness of my Wacom inks on this drawing. I think the Karate Kid headband was a nice touch.

Happy Birthday, Blog

Yesterday marked the one year anniversary of my blog. Time flies when you're having fun. It has been quite a challenge to regularly maintain a blog. I certainly know a lot more about blogging than when I started. Learning how to schedule blog posts in advance was a tremendous help. It's also been a tremendous amount of fun sharing my artwork with the internet. I've especially enjoyed writing about my work. My artist commentaries help others understand my thought process and remind me why I love drawing so much. After 266 posts, I'm still going strong.

HEADS UP: I hope you like the new blog header. I wanted to do something Halloween-y and pay tribute to my favorite Halloween TV special, It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. Yes, that's Roofus sitting in the pumpkin patch wearing his ghost costume.

24 Hour Comic EPIC FAIL: Part 6

Here's the last page of my 2010 24 Hour Comic. It's unfinished but I decided to post it anyway. One of these days, I'll finish the story. I'd really like to know what happens. In fact, feel free leave suggestions in the comments sections of my blog or on my Facebook page. A special thanks to all of my friends and fellow artists who offered encouragement before and during 24 Hour Comic Day.

If you're an artist (especially if you're a comic book artist or cartoonist) and you have not taken the 24 Hour Comic challenge, I HIGHLY encourage you to at least try. Whether you succeed or fail, it's an experience you'll never forget.

24 Hour Comic EPIC FAIL: Part 5

So, you might ask, "What's the point of doing a 24 Hour Comic; why do you do it?" Because it's a fun and creative artistic challenge. It's fun to test yourself as artist and see what you can do when you push yourself to the limit. Sometimes, you succeed. Other times you fail. At the end of the day, you know that you tried. Plus, knowing that artists all around the globe are trying with you is an inspiring thought as well. No, I didn't complete the challenge this year. But I tried. And had fun doing it. See you on 24 Hour Comic Day 2011.

24 Hour Comic EPIC FAIL: Part 4

Here's another thought I had about this year's 24 Hour Comic. I'm very experienced at writing and drawing comic strips. I've been making them since I was 10. When I was trying to write the continuous story for my 24 Hour Comic, I realized writing a comic book story is VERY DIFFERENT from writing a comic strip. The pacing is different. The joke structure isn't the same. It's a completely different thought process. Trying to do this in the span of 24 hours only complicates matters.

24 Hour Comic EPIC FAIL: Part 3

In past years, my 24 Hour Comics have been collections of short stories, comic strips and gag cartoons. This year, I wanted to do something different. My goal was to do one continuous story with 6 panels per page. I was determined to do one complete story or nothing at all. I ended up with neither: an incomplete story and not quite nothing.

24 Hour Comic EPIC FAIL: Part 2

I've been thinking about what went wrong with my 24 Hour Comic. I think one of the problems was my technique. In the past years, I've drawn my 24 Hour Comics traditionally by hand with pen and paper. This year, I tried to do it using my Wacom tablet. I think this contributed to fatigue, since I was forced to sit in front of my computer all day. When drawing with pen and paper, it allows me the mobility of moving around the house and staying comfortable (sitting on my bed, sitting on my couch/recliner). I think next year, I'll switch back to the tried and true process of drawing. (I'm not knocking my Wacom tablet. I still love it.)

24 Hour Comic EPIC FAIL: Part 1

Well, another 24 Hour Comic Day has come and gone. Unfortunately, this year I did not successfully meet the challenge. I was looking forward to this day all year. So when October 2 finally arrived, I was ready. I got up early Saturday morning, ate some breakfast, took a shower and prepared to knock out a comic book within the span of 24 hours. I plopped down in front of my Wacom tablet and iMac eager to go to work. Then, it hit me: writer's block.

The first hour passed. Nothing. The second and third. Still nothing. I got up. Took a break. Sat back down. Nothing. Ate lunch. Watched a little TV. Sat back down. NOTHING. You get the idea. This went on all day until about 11 pm and I gave up. I woke up early Sunday morning and decided to take another crack at it. I figured maybe I could do a 12 hour, 12 page comic. That didn't happen either. I got about 6 pages done and called it quits.

I won't lie. I'm bummed that I didn't meet the challenge. Do I regret it? Hell, no. In fact, I can't wait til next year. So without further ado, here's my 2010 24 Hour Comic attempt. I'm gonna post a page per day, so check back each day to read the next page. I didn't finish the story. One of these days, I will. I'd like to see what happens.

24 Hour Comic Day 2010

Well, today's the day: 24 Hour Comic Day. Today, I'll be attempting to draw a 24 page comic book within 24 hours. Am I crazy? No. Will I be crazy by the end of the 24 hours? Most likely. At the very least, I'll be giddy from sleep deprivation. Regardless, I'm going to make a valid effort to complete an entire comic book in one day. To all my fellow 24 Hour Comic artists, I say to you, good luck. And most importantly, have fun.

Hope you enjoyed my very first 24 Hour Comic that I've been posting all month. Just for fun, I'm posting the entire comic in one long post for easy reading. And check out my other 24 Hour comics HERE and HERE.
